This study arises from the need to highlight the work Solo, for five-string double bass, by the Portuguese composer Jorge Peixinho. More than three decades have passed since his passing, there remains significant work to be done in preserving and promoting his legacy, whether through the critical edition of his manuscripts or through a deeper investigation into his musical output. The analysis of this piece is yet to be conducted; therefore, this study aims to provide the reader, the musician, and the performer with a more comprehensive understanding of its context, offering an analytical interpretation of its structure and meaning.
Using a comparative methodological approach, this research establishes parallels between Solo and other representative works of the contemporary European repertoire, particularly those of composers such as Luciano Berio and Karlheinz Stockhausen. The analysis is framed within the concept of Mosaic Forms, which is considered particularly suitable for describing the structural organization of this piece by Peixinho.
As a key contribution, this study seeks to deepen the understanding of Jorge Peixinho’s musical language, a pivotal figure in contemporary composition, recognizing Solo as a landmark work within the double bass repertoire. Furthermore, the research highlights the increasing importance of this instrument in contemporary musical writing, emphasizing its growing prominence in today’s art music landscape.
